DIABETES IS THE OPPOSITE OF ASTHMA ?

TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS IS A DISEASE OF EVOLUTION

1.       It’s occurrence is decided both by genetics and environment like evolution.

2.       It is very well correlated with obesity. Excessive adipose tissue served an evolutionary purpose as a source of reserve energy while the organism was migrating from aquatic to terrestrial habitat. Adipose tissue thus is a vestigial tissue in humans. Adiposity positively correlated to Diabetes makes it an evolutionary disease.

3.       Normal blood glucose gradually increases from 20mgs/dl in quadrupeds to 80 mgs /dl in humans and much more than that among diabetics.

4.       Lower animals are "hypermetropic”. When blood glucose increases in humans as in diabetes, the refraction shifts towards "myopia"

5.       Pregnancy is a miniature milestone in evolution. Gestational diabetes can be explained as "Diabetes occurring while evolving" more so when the blood glucose becomes normal post partum.

6.       Lower animals have in their body a complex metalloprotein viz "Glucose tolerance factor" containing Chromium the trace element. In humans Chromium corrects the glucose intolerance caused by prolonged parenteral nutrition.

BRONCHIAL ASTHMA IS A DISEASE OF INVOLUTION (the opposite of evolution)

Bronchial asthma is characterized by episodes of sudden severe breathlessness, expiratory wheeze, saline bronchial secretions.
Thus an asthmatic behaves as though he is just drowned in water and rescued.
For humans sudden brief migration to water is the reverse of evolution. And this involution is mostly functional because in between two episodes of Bronchial Asthma there are no structural changes in bronchial tree.
Cold humid weather is the miniature version of drowning in water.

Adrenalin, Methyl xanthines, Corticosteroids relieve Asthma but increase blood glucose.
Exercise and Sulpha drugs reduce blood glucose but precipitate an Asthmatic effect.

CONCLUSION:

TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS AND BRONCHIAL ASTHMA  ARE ETIOLOGICALLY OPPOSITE DISESES  AND SO CAN / DO NOT OCCUR IN THE SAME INDIVIDUAL

This concept helps in exploring newer ways of treating both Diabetes and Asthma.
